The Buzz: Pickers-inspired thrift to open in Appleton

Kimberly couple Shawn and Amy Wilde model themselves after the pickers and thrifters they see on TV shows like “American Pickers” and “Storage Wars.”

They scavenge for goods in abandoned storage lockers, on curbs and in garage sales that they resell on eBay and in their own garage sale.

But when the goods exceeded the capacity of their garage, they started looking for a retail location.

Their new store, A-Town Thrift, will open Aug. 1 at 706 E. Wisconsin Ave. in Appleton. That spot formerly housed Pete’s Beverage and Bangkok Oriental Foods, but had been vacant for a year.

“The building was in rough shape. We replaced the rotting ceiling tiles and painted the walls. We’re turning the old coolers into lighted display cases,” said Shawn Wilde.

Because they’ve been quick to pick up whatever people don’t want, from knickknacks and clothing to dressers and antiques, they’ve gotten a lot of things for free. “People say, ‘We’re moving. Take it all.’ One guy gave us 200 ugly Christmas sweaters,” he said.

“Our prices will be the same as other thrifts or lower.”
